“Nam-oppa? Not Namgung?”

Namgung-Woo’s expression clouded at Song Chae-ji’s words.

Hwang Mu-tak, standing behind him, probably didn’t notice the subtle shift, but Song Chae-ji did.

Yet, she brushed it off, hurrying over to Namgung-Woo and tugged on his arm.

Namgung-Woo was bewildered by her sudden friendliness and casual behavior.

It wasn’t as if they were strangers. They’d helped each other, even exchanged weapons. But this casual touch was unexpected.

“Miss Chae-ji? My name…”

“We should get back, Nam-oppa! We left Ahjussi at the inn by himself. And the payment? The Black Bear Gang will bring it over, right?”

Hwang Mu-tak, still somewhat disoriented, readily agreed, caught up in Song Chae-ji’s whirlwind of activity.

“Y-Yes, of course.”

“Well, that’s settled then. Good work today, Nam-oppa.”

He still didn’t understand the constant “oppa,” but he assumed there was a reason. He’d let her have her way for now.

“Yes. I’m also worried about him being alone at the inn in his condition.”

The three of them left the Black Bear Gang compound, leaving a bewildered Hwang Mu-tak behind.

◇◇◇◆◇◇◇

“Are you… *the* Namgung?” Song Chae-ji asked the moment they were back at the inn.

Namgung-Woo chuckled.

So, the Namgung Family existed in this world too.

He’d figured their paths would cross eventually… but he wasn’t about to change his name… though he hadn’t expected it to happen so soon.

He cherished his name, a precious gift from his parents.

So, he wouldn’t change it just because there happened to be another Namgung Family around.

That’s why he nodded firmly.

“That’s right. Unless there’s a fake Namgung I should know about?”

He’d meant it as a joke, but Song Chae-ji’s reaction was odd.

She considered his question with a thoughtful “Hmm…” before nodding slowly.

“Well… there have been a few. None of them met a good end, though.”

“I suppose the Namgung Family wouldn’t just ignore imposters.”

“Huh? What… Oh, wait… you don’t mean…?”

Her expression flickered through a range of emotions before settling on a look of dawning comprehension.

Namgung-Woo, intrigued by the rapid shift in her expression, let out a soft “Oh.”

Song Chae-ji shot him a look, like an exasperated older sister dealing with a clueless younger brother.

“What’s with that look?”

“Nothing, nothing at all.”

“…Some of us are worried.”

“Worried? I’m fine. I am a Namgung after all.”

Though not from *the* Namgung Family.

He decided not to add that last part.

It would be strange for a martial artist with the surname Namgung to deny any connection to the famous family.

But his words only seemed to deepen Song Chae-ji’s astonishment.

“Well, yes, of course…with your level of skill…”

“Then what’s the problem?”

His genuine concern prompted her to ask one final, probing question.

“You really don’t know?”

“Know what?”

Any lingering doubts vanished.

Song Chae-ji was now certain.

‘This man is the real deal.’

‘And he’s completely clueless.’

“Sigh… I should have realized… when you didn’t even know about the Shadowless Sect… You really did spend your whole life training in some secluded mountain cave, didn’t you…?”

Maybe he picked up on the shift in her tone, the hidden worry. A brief moment of unease flashed across his normally composed features.

With a heavy heart, Song Chae-ji decided to break the news to him.

“The Namgung Family… they were annihilated twenty years ago.”

“…What?”

◇◇◇◆◇◇◇

For a moment, he was speechless.

But the Yin True Qi in his upper dantian quickly cooled his mind, restoring his composure.

He rationally processed the information.

Annihilated?

The Namgung Family? Annihilation?

He’d entertained the possibility that the Namgung Family might not exist in this world, but he’d never imagined they’d been wiped out.

‘So Chae-ji thinks I’m some surviving heir, hidden away by the Namgung Family?’

That explained her reactions.

‘And I have to admit, it’s a pretty convincing story.’

A handsome young man with a noble air.

Well-educated, clearly from a good family, yet utterly oblivious to current events.

He didn’t know about the Shadowless Sect, the dominant unorthodox sect in Shanxi, or the annihilation of the Namgung Family, an event that had shaken the entire martial world.

Yet, his martial arts were extraordinary.

Anyone would think,

‘Ah, this young master must have spent his whole life training in some hidden mountain cave and just recently emerged!’

And he was a Namgung.

The Namgung Family which was destroyed twenty years ago.

He appeared as youthful as someone barely twenty.

His refined swordsmanship, so reminiscent of the Namgung Family’s famed techniques.

It all lined up perfectly.

‘It’s so perfect, it’s almost comical.’

He couldn’t help but chuckle at the sheer absurdity of the coincidence.

But it was too late to backpedal now. Even Yang So-dang, listening nearby, had tears welling up.

‘I didn’t see this coming. Maybe I shouldn’t have used my real name.’

Song Chae-ji seemed lost in thought, weaving an elaborate narrative around him.

He didn’t even need his Ever-Clear Vision. He could see the story unfolding in her eyes.

It probably went something like this:

When the Namgung Family was annihilated, the remaining members desperately tried to save a surviving heir. A newborn infant, entrusted to a loyal servant, raised in a secret mountain hideout, trained in martial arts…..

And now, twenty years later, the last Namgung, his martial skills honed to perfection, had finally emerged.

There were probably gaps and leaps in logic, but those were easily glossed over by the dramatic tale of the last surviving heir.

No sword? He’d broken them all during his training. His powerful internal energy was too much for ordinary swords to handle.

Unaware of the Namgung Family’s destruction?

His guardian must have died before telling him. Or perhaps he’d believed other survivors were rebuilding the family.

Why was he in Shanxi Province, so far from the Namgung Family’s ancestral home in Southern Zhili? He’d obviously fled to escape his family’s enemies.

It all made sense in her mind.

Perhaps because she was human before she was a martial artist, Song Chae-ji’s emotions momentarily got the better of her. She finally composed herself and asked,

“…So, what are your plans now?”

“I haven’t really thought about it. I’ll probably just wander for a while.”

“I’d love to invite you to stay with us, but…”

Her voice trailed off.

She wanted to help, but she couldn’t. Just as she couldn’t bring herself to admit defeat earlier, she seemed unable to voice her true feelings now.

“I understand.”

But he didn’t, not even a little.

He didn’t even know who had destroyed the Namgung Family, or how.

But his words seemed to impress Song Chae-ji even more.

His composure, born of ignorance, must have seemed like remarkable resilience, the strength to walk a lonely path.

“The order to hunt down any remaining Namgung is still in effect. I haven’t heard of anyone being killed recently, but… that’s probably because they killed anyone claiming to be a Namgung, whether real or fake, in the past, so no one dares to use the name anymore.”

“Still in effect?”

“Yes. The Dugu Family are relentless.”

The Dugu Family.

So, that was the name of the family that had annihilated the Namgung Family.

But why would the righteous sects allow the Dugu Family, a righteous sect themselves, to destroy another righteous sect, the Namgung Family, and then openly issue a bounty on any survivors?

There was so much he didn’t know. He wanted to ask Song Chae-ji for details, but he hesitated, worried it would only make the misunderstanding worse.

‘Even So-dang seems to know about the Namgung Family… it must be a well-known event. I can find out more later.’

Three people knew he was a Namgung.

Song Chae-ji and Yang So-dang wouldn’t say anything, and thanks to Song Chae-ji’s quick thinking, Hwang Mu-tak probably still thought his name was just “Nam.”

So, effectively, no one knew his true identity. He had plenty of time to travel and gather information.

“What about your plans?”

“I have to return to Mount Heng. And so does Dang-ah.”

“My father and I used to work for Unnie’s family. We’ll probably go back to the Song household.”

Yang So-dang’s voice was thick with unshed tears.

She was remarkably resilient for her age, considering what she’d been through.

“So that’s why you came to help them.”

“I happened to be nearby. I came alone because I couldn’t involve the Hangsang Sect officially.”

“Because of the Shadowless Sect.”

“Right. The unorthodox sects hold a lot of power in Shanxi…”

The conversation came to an abrupt halt.

Neither Namgung-Woo nor Song Chae-ji seemed to know what to say next.

Finally, deciding there was no reason to be awkward, Namgung-Woo spoke.

“So, I guess this is goodbye.”

“Are you… going south? Back to Southern Zhili?”

Song Chae-ji asked, her voice laced with concern. Was he going after the Dugu Family for revenge?

“Not yet. I’m going to travel for a while. There’s a lot to see in Shanxi, even if I head north.”

“Well… Mount Heng is pretty far north.”

Since she couldn’t invite him to Mount Heng, this was where they had to part ways.

Song Chae-ji felt a pang of regret. She owed him a debt, and she couldn’t repay it.

Bringing him back from the street?

That wasn’t exactly a favor, to be honest… and even then, it was So-dang who had found him and brought him to the inn.

But he’d fought for her, and she’d gained valuable insight from witnessing his Unity of Body and Sword. She couldn’t just let him leave empty-handed.

“…Traveling alone can be dangerous.” [T/N: ???]

“I suppose, but…” [T/N: and he agrees?]

“Let me recommend an escort agency. They’re close with my family, so my recommendation should carry some weight.”

Helping a Namgung.

It could be seen as a challenge to the Dugu Family, but she wouldn’t abandon him out of fear. Even if the Hangsang Sect couldn’t officially help, she wanted to do something.

She pulled out a small brush and inkstone and quickly wrote a letter of recommendation.

“It’s called the Yo-Pyeong Escort Agency. They’re in Lin Fen County.”

And so, Namgung-Woo’s first destination was set.
