When I lost consciousness in the game and opened my eyes again, the game world had become reality.

◇◇◇◆◇◇◇

“I’m quitting soon.”

Namgung-Woo couldn’t immediately understand what he’d just heard.

He stared blankly for a moment and replayed the words in his mind, then looked at the person in front of him again, as if to confirm they had truly said those words.

The other person, seemingly aware of the question in Namgung-Woo’s gaze, offered a bitter smile and said,

“Sorry.”

“Ah, no, it’s… okay.”

Though his words suggested otherwise, it was clear to anyone that Namgung-Woo was disappointed.

“I’ve been playing for a long time, after all.”

Quitting.

In the game, that meant stopping playing.

Chu-rok Murim.

It was a game with a considerable history, originating from the very early days when virtual reality became popular and various themed games sprouted and disappeared like mushrooms after the rain.

As its name suggested, Chu-rok Murim was based on a martial arts world setting, and it was highly praised at its launch for its sensational open world and detailed implementation of martial arts techniques.

However, five years later, it had long since become an outdated game.

So, quitting wasn’t particularly strange.

Even if it wasn’t Chu-rok Murim, there were now various other martial arts-based virtual reality games.

But the fact that she had stayed until now meant she wasn’t quitting for that reason. If that were the case, she would have quit long ago.

So, with lingering regret, Namgung-Woo asked, “But why are you quitting, Mae-nim?”

He clung to a faint hope that he might somehow help her and convince her to stay, but that hope crumbled with her response.

“I’m going to study abroad. In Australia.”

“Ah…”

“I could still log in from there, but… I want to focus on my studies.”

There was nothing more he could say to that. Namgung-Woo felt a sigh welling up in his chest.

Many acquaintances he knew in the game had quit and left, but this time, it was particularly painful.

Every single acquaintance in the game was a precious connection to him.

Some might scoff, saying they were just people he met in a game, people whose real names and faces he didn’t even know.

But Namgung-Woo considered them no different from friends he’d made in real life.

And Mae was especially special among them.

Namgung-Woo was a latecomer.

He started Chu-rok Murim when the game had already been open for three years, when the highest achievable level had already been unlocked.

It was a time when the game’s management was poor, new players were dwindling, and existing users were leaving one by one.

It wasn’t easy for a new user like Namgung-Woo to adapt.

That’s when she helped him.

She approached him, saying their shared surname “Namgung” was a coincidence and kindly taught him everything about Chu-rok Murim.

Where to hunt for faster leveling, which events were efficient, which items were good, which martial arts skills had synergistic effects, and so on.

More than 90% of Namgung-Woo’s knowledge of Chu-rok Murim came from Namgung-Mae.

Their relationship didn’t end with her initial help.

Namgung-Woo grew rapidly with her guidance, and since Namgung-Mae enjoyed the game at a leisurely pace, their levels soon became similar.

Since then, the two had stuck together like glue.

Even within the ‘Namgung Family’ guild, formed by users with the surname Namgung in their nicknames, the two were particularly inseparable.

The time attack challenges they attempted in dungeons, the late nights spent sharing stories while admiring beautiful scenery, the sparring matches where she, claiming to teach him how to fight, relentlessly beat his inexperienced self… all remained as fond and cherished memories.

Namgung-Woo’s rise to become one of the top-ranked players, despite being a latecomer to Chu-rok Murim, was entirely motivated by his desire to repay Namgung-Mae.

She was his driving force, his reason for playing.

The thought of her absence made a part of his heart ache.

“It’ll be lonely.”

But he couldn’t hold her back. It would be selfish to keep her from pursuing her dreams and focusing on her real life just for his own enjoyment.

Perhaps he looked too pathetic.

Namgung-Mae offered a comforting smile and said,

“Well… it might be over in a year.”

“A year?”

Namgung-Woo knew her age. If she was going to study abroad, it would be for a master’s degree, which wouldn’t be completed in a year, would it?

“Overseas programs are often shorter than in Korea. It could take two years at most, but they said it’s usually done in a year and a half.”

“Aha.”

“Then I’ll really be riding your bus, Woo-nim.”

“But I can already drive the bus now.”

“Come on. In a year, you’ll really be at the Transcendent Realm.”

“I’ll carry you on my bus whenever you come back, so please come back. You will, right?”

“Pfft.. what if you quit first, Woo-nim?”

“Well? Maybe if the server shuts down?”

“Ah… I really think it’s going to shut down.”

Namgung-Mae spoke with genuine concern.

Even now, with the number of concurrent users plummeting, large-scale raids were out of the question.

Back when Namgung-Woo started, it wasn’t uncommon for beginners to grow with the help of experienced players.

There were many high-level players raising alternate characters.

But now, even those high-level players were leaving and beginners were quitting before they could even properly start.

“But it’ll last for a year somehow. There’s still a lot of unreleased content.”

“I guess so?”

“Don’t worry about me. I’m the Family Head, after all. I’ll wait here until the server shuts down.”

He meant it.

If he hadn’t met Namgung-Mae, Namgung-Woo wouldn’t have played Chu-rok Murim so diligently.

Feeling embarrassed by his own words, Namgung-Woo quickly changed the subject.

“By the way, have you talked to Pung-nim?”

Although Namgung-Woo and Namgung-Mae were closest to each other, the three of them, including Namgung-Pung, had been together much more often.

They were quite famous as the Namgung-Trio, but that was a story of the past now.

“Hmm… I’m planning to say my final goodbyes when he comes next week. It might be a bit sudden, but that’s Pung-nim’s fault for not logging in often.”

Namgung-Mae tried to lighten the somber mood with a playful jab, the kind only close friends could make.

Seeing her like that, Namgung-Woo couldn’t stay dejected any longer.

“Then, since this might be the last time, shall we do a tour?”

“Oh! Sounds good!”

◇◇◇◆◇◇◇

After Namgung-Mae left, saying she had things to do for her study abroad preparations, Namgung-Woo was left alone and groaned as he stared at the empty Namgung Family management window.

“This game is really dead.”

Namgung-Woo muttered dejectedly, seeing that he was the only one online in a guild with a full 50 members.

The reason why Namgung-Woo had taken over the position of guild leader, called the “Head” within Namgung Family, was obvious.

“Should I try the Hongwon Tower?”

Hongwon Tower

It was a common end-game content meant to test players’ limits.

A tower filled with impossibly strong mob monsters, the goal was simple: how many floors could you clear? The Hongwon Tower had yet to see anyone surpass the 10th floor.

Namgung-Woo’s personal best record was also the 9th floor.

But today, he felt like he could finally break through the 9th floor and set foot on the 10th.

If he could make it to the 10th floor, where no one had reached before, even Namgung-Mae would be amazed.

He would give her the unknown territory of Chu-rok Murim as a farewell gift.

The thought brought some energy back into his gloomy heart.

As the saying goes, ‘if you think it, do it’. Following the spirit of unity of thought and action, Namgung-Woo immediately put his thoughts into action.

“Since potions and buffs don’t work in Hongwon Tower anyway, let’s just go straight in.”

The Hongwon Tower was a special map accessible from any village with an entry ticket. Namgung-Woo immediately used his ticket and began climbing the tower.

With each floor he cleared, filled with various enemies like yokai, monsters, and legendary masters, the vague feeling Namgung-Woo had felt gradually turned into certainty.

Today was different.

Perhaps it was because his sense of purpose was stronger than ever before. He felt like he could truly conquer the 9th floor of Hongwon Tower, which no one in Chu-rok Murim had ever achieved.

The moment he defeated Jehyeol-gong , the ruler of the 9th floor, Namgung-Woo felt a surge of unparalleled joy and immediately dashed towards the 10th floor.

And the moment his foot finally touched the unexplored 10th floor…

A voice that seemed to resonate not through his ears, but his very soul, shook his consciousness.

[Finally]

It felt strange.

Chu-rok Murim had mystical voice transmission methods like Jeoneumimmil and Hyegwangsimeo.

However, they ultimately couldn’t transcend the limitations of hearing.

But this voice that Namgung-Woo was hearing now truly transcended that.

[The destined one has arrived]

Immediately after sensing the anomaly, Namgung-Woo’s consciousness was engulfed in darkness.

Within his fading, sinking consciousness, the last thought that crossed Namgung-Woo’s mind remained consistent.

‘I have to go… see her off.’
