‘As expected.’

I looked with satisfaction at the Rock Centipede, which had died miserably without even showing a few proper patterns.

Chunks of rock that were once its head rolled on the ground, covered in ice.

Entrusting the Rock Centipede’s finish to the knight commanders was definitely the right choice.

They handled it much faster, safer, and more swiftly than if I had done it.

If it were me, I would have had to repeat rolling and attacking for a long time.

“It was just big in size, but nothing special. As you said, newbie, it was slow and easy to defeat.”

Lizé walked over and said those words.

The ice that had covered her silver armor melted away. When she removed her helmet, her blue hair was revealed.

“That’s certainly true. If we had attacked alone, we could have easily defeated it.”

Erica also took off her helmet.

The bun tied at the back of her head stood out even more.

Clank, the sound of Erica sheathing her katana back into its scabbard was heard.

“Is this the end, newbie?”

“Yes. How could it possibly survive in that state?”

“……I once faced a demon that could regenerate even after its body was torn apart. Just in case.”

“That’s not just torn apart, you know?”

I pointed to the Rock Centipede’s corpse.

Its head was frozen and shattered into pieces, and below that, it was melted and scorched by flames.

The remaining parts were miserably crushed.

It was definitely not something that could be described with just one word.

“That’s true.”

Iris chuckled softly.

It seemed like it was a joke-like remark from the beginning.

‘I roughly understand what you’re talking about.’

The demon that could regenerate even after its body was torn apart, mentioned just now, referred to one of the mid-game bosses.

It was a boss that could arbitrarily cut its body into pieces and reattach them, which often caused the boss fight to drag on and turn into a game of tag, so the evaluation wasn’t very good.

Still, it wasn’t as bad as the Rock Centipede.

A few years ago, Iris had fought against it and retreated without being able to finish it, so if you showed her proof of subjugating it, she would be very pleased and praise the main character profusely.

“Mr. Newbie. It’s your turn now. You know what to do, right?”

Erica glanced back.

In the direction of her gaze, there was a rune stele glowing in green.

The stele that provided the rune disappeared and reappeared somewhere else, and its location and timing were completely random.

It could reappear in a few days, or it could take decades for it to appear again.

This fact could be confirmed from the writings of a scholar who had dedicated his life to studying the regularity of its random appearances but failed and screamed in despair.

It was also one of the few comedic scenes in Brightest Darkness 4.

I approached the stele from which a faint green light was emanating.

I saw ancient characters with unknown meanings engraved on the stone.

Behind my back, I felt three pairs of intense gazes.

“I’m starting.”

I placed my hand on it.

The green light swirling inside the stele began to transfer to me.

It felt like a strong wind blowing through my blood vessels inside my body.

I closed my eyes and chose the location where the rune tattoo would be engraved.

It was possible to engrave it anywhere on the body, but the most natural place was still the back of the hand.

As I concentrated my mind as if touching the in-game UI, the wind that had been running through my whole body soon gathered to the back of my left hand.

My hand trembled involuntarily for a moment, and a hot sensation rose.

The heat soon subsided.

I opened my eyes and examined the back of my hand. I saw a tattoo with a unique shape.

It was a tattoo symbolizing the Vitality Enhancement Rune.

‘I don’t particularly feel anything.’

It might be because stamina wasn’t depleted right now, and there was no particular stamina consumption unless I did 4-5 consecutive rolls.

‘There were also those who chose a female character and engraved this on the lower abdomen.’

The original meaning wasn’t dirty at all, but thinking about it reminded me of those who used to play around with it for strange purposes.

For example, engraving a uterus tattoo on a female character.

Some users deliberately chose the character’s gender as female, customized it sexily, dressed it in revealing clothes, and combined runes to create a shape similar to a heart on the vulva.

‘They’re really genius bastards.’

Such users would often create heart or uterus shapes using combinations that no one else had ever thought of. Or they would modify the shape of the tattoo itself through modding.

While I was having these useless thoughts, the transfer of the rune was completed.

The green light had completely merged into my body.

The stele that had given me the rune lost its light, turned into an ordinary pile of rocks, and crumbled.

It would probably appear again in a dungeon somewhere in the world.

Of course, that’s just the setting.

Even if a rune reappeared, there had never been a case where a player acquired the same rune again in the same playthrough.

It was just a device to add plausibility to why players could acquire all the runes.

“Is it over, newbie?”

“Here, the rune tattoo. I’ve definitely absorbed it.”

“What’s the effect of the rune?”

‘……Huh?’

My mind froze for a moment at Iris’s question.

Come to think of it, how do I check the effect of the rune?

In the game, you could just press Esc, open the character status window, and check it there, but now there was no status window or stat window.

There was no way to directly confirm the effect of the rune at the moment.

I had memorized the effect of the Vitality Enhancement Rune itself.

It increased the natural recovery speed of the character’s stamina by a certain amount. But there was no way to directly confirm it through text or anything.

“……”

“……?”

Iris looked at me, who was blankly frozen, with eyes that seemed to ask why I was like that.

“Isn’t there something that comes to your mind? That’s the effect of the rune.”

‘Ah, so that’s how it is.’

It seemed that here, when you acquired a rune, information about it immediately came to your mind.

I already knew about the Vitality Enhancement Rune, so nothing particularly came to mind.

There was no need to worry about whether the knight commanders knew the concept of stamina.

They had already seen the names of the stats in the ability confirmation orb.

“Uh…… it says it increases the natural recovery speed of stamina?”

“That’s a fairly useful effect. With that much, you’re on the lucky side. Congratulations, newbie.”

As I expected, Iris understood its meaning right away.

Although it was an effect that I could do without, it was still an effect that wouldn’t hurt to have.

“With this, we’ve achieved the purpose of entering the dungeon. Then the only thing left is to get out……”

Erica looked around.

“I don’t see any passageways leading to the outside. We might have to go back the way we came.”

Lizé grimaced at the mention of going back the way they came.

It was a place they had walked down for nearly an hour and a half.

It was only natural to react like that if they had to walk all the way back up.

It’s okay.

When you obtain the rune, a wall on one side collapses anyway.

“Still, there won’t be any demons, so it’s not a big deal except that it will take quite some timeㅡ”

Rumble, before Iris could even finish her sentence, the wall right behind where the rune was located collapsed, revealing a path.

“……I guess not.”

“It seems that when you acquire the rune, a part of the wall collapses. I’ll record this in the report later as well.”

“Do that. Newbie, is there anything else you need to do here?”

I shook my head from side to side.

Once the rune was acquired, there was no need to come back here again.

There were no separate items, and there was nothing left to obtain.

Even if there was a reason to come back, I wouldn’t.

Damn Rock Centipede.

“Understood. Everyone, prepare to leave.”

The way out was quick.

Erica and Iris put their heads together and pondered over how the structure of the dungeon was arranged, while Lizé, as always, stuck close to my side and chattered away.

Outside, darkness that made it impossible to see even an inch ahead was spread out.

It felt like several hours had passed.

Considering that a dungeon for acquiring runes usually took 20 minutes at most to clear, it had taken a damn long time.

Moreover, most of that time was spent performing the Rock Centipede’s gimmicks.

Even taking into account that the scale had become more realistic compared to the game, Iris and Erica also said it was a considerably large dungeon, so it was indeed a long time.

‘With this, all the rune slots are unlocked.’

Now, I just needed to go to another dungeon, obtain the rune that allowed me to ignore the debuff of combat fatigue, and then gradually level up while continuing the main story.

‘……Wait a minute. But how far is it to that place?’

As I recalled the location of the next dungeon, I paused my thoughts for a moment due to an unexpected realization.

Even in the game, the distance between the city where the Silver Dawn Knights were located and the dungeon where the rune that allowed ignoring the combat fatigue debuff was quite far.

Let alone now that everything had expanded to real-life scale, it was too obvious what the distance between the two would be like.

Just thinking about how long it took to ride a horse to reach the boss field of the Headless Armored Cavalier, which should have only taken a few minutes, gave the answer.

‘…….’

No matter how little, it seemed like it would take a full 3 weeks.

“What are you doing, newbie? We’re leaving now.”

“Ah, I had something to think about for a moment. Sorry. I’ll be right there.”

Iris, who had already collected the jewels around the horse and mounted it, urged me.

Lizé and Erica were also waiting for me.

I made a brief apology and got on my horse.

“Since it’s late at night, let’s hurry back.”

Iris rode her horse and took off. Erica followed close behind.

Lizé and I followed at a slight distance.

“Wait a moment. I have something to say.”

“……?”

After riding for some time, Lizé, who had been riding right next to me, spoke in a serious voice.

“What is it?”

“I can tell you have something on your mind, newbie. I wanted to ask what’s going on.”

“Wait, was it that obvious?”

“It was an expression that couldn’t be missed.”

“……”

Indeed, it was a matter I was quite seriously contemplating.

I knew the surrounding terrain and approximate locations, but I couldn’t just set off recklessly based on that alone.

It wasn’t just a matter of a few days, but nearly 3 weeks.

I wasn’t confident if I could find my way properly.

“I don’t know what you’re thinking about again, but there’s nothing good that will come out of worrying about it alone. I know you’re worried about us, but we’re just as worried about you. It might be better for all of us to worry together rather than you struggling alone.”

“……Why are you being so serious all of a sudden?”

“I know how to read the atmosphere too, you know?”

Lizé chuckled.

And if only she hadn’t immediately teased me by saying, “I heard men’s worries are usually solved by touching a woman’s breasts. What do you think, interested?” it would have been perfect comfort.

‘Well, there’s no reason for me to worry alone.’

It was also about time to reveal the fact that my stats had increased, and it was time to start sharing information that would be helpful to the Silver Dawn Knights in earnest.

It was time to bring out the shield of omnipotence once again.

I was lured by an invitation email to the beta test of the sequel to the game I’ve been playing for the past 10 years. To my surprise, all the mods I’ve installed over the years were still there. Everything from enemy enhancement mods to NPC gender swap and appearance retouching mods were intact. Even mods for changing the characters’ outfits were still in place. *Takes inspiration from Sekiro + Soulsborne series.

i did question that too lol. they’re one and half hour deep underground, so how does quick exit work there? Teleport? Fly? Even if the dungeon spiraling down and take elevator up, it still won’t change much right? Lmao
