“I’m not joking. I’m serious.”

“Actually, I don’t understand either.”

…He doesn’t understand?

I wasn’t sure what part he didn’t understand.

I pulled the blueprints back and checked them. I didn’t think I wrote anything too complicated.

I put the blueprints down and asked Principal Merlin,

“What don’t you understand?”

“What’s an ergonomic design?”

“…It means a design optimized for the human body.”

“Why are there so many parts?”

“This many are necessary to replicate a human joint.”

I planned to simplify it further, but to make it function like a real elbow would require quite a bit of refinement.

For now, I intended to make it as detailed as possible and then gradually simplify it.

“What is this circled part?”

“That’s where the elastic material goes. To reduce and disperse impact when force is applied to the arm, allowing for smooth movement.”

“Hmm… Interesting. Then what’s this device attached to the forearm?”

“A self-defense mechanism.”

“Why would you add that?”

“It’s good to have one in case of emergencies.”

“Remove it.”

Tsk.

I decisively marked a large X over the blade ejection device designed for the elbow.

Viola, who had been watching, pointed at my blueprint and said,

“How can anyone understand this if you draw the entire thing on one sheet! Blueprints for complex objects should be drawn separately for each part!”

“I see.”

“It’s not just ‘I see’… Never mind. Continue.”

Viola, who had been raising her voice at me, lowered her voice and glanced at Merlin. Principal Merlin stroked his beard, chuckled, and said to me,

“Haha, Miss Viola is right. Cramming everything onto one sheet makes it difficult to understand. Take out six sheets of paper and draw separate blueprints for the hand, wrist, elbow, forearm, upper arm, and the entire arm.”

If necessary, I would.

I took out six sheets of paper and drew the blueprints for each part. By dividing each section and redrawing them, the blueprints became much cleaner.

I handed the six sheets to them.

“Is it easier to understand now?”

“Much better than before.”

“It’s still complicated…”

Viola and Principal Merlin exchanged the blueprints and stared intently at them. It seemed they needed more time to process the information, so I crossed my arms and waited until they fully understood the blueprints.

It was ten minutes later when they finally looked up at me.

“Impressive. To be able to pull such detailed blueprints straight from your head.”

“I can’t believe you can just pull this out of your head… It would take me at least a month of agonizing over this to come up with a design like this.”

“I’ve been thinking about it for a long time.”

Of course, that was a lie.

I was just making excuses because I was too lazy to explain. I pulled the full arm blueprint and traced it from shoulder to fingertips, looking back and forth between them.

“I’ll make the parts myself. Principal Merlin, you can engrave the magic circuits and inscriptions. Viola, you will wear the prosthetic arm and test it.”

“Magic circuits?”

“I’m thinking of trying two methods. Engraving a control magic circle like a golem so it can be controlled, or integrating it with the body so it can move naturally.”

“Interesting. But how do you integrate it? It’s still a fake arm.”

He wasn’t asking because he didn’t know. It felt like he was testing me.

Since I couldn’t avoid answering, I slowly explained.

“How do you think the human body moves?”

“Hmm. The brain sends signals, the muscles move, and the muscles move the bones, right?”

“Then how are those signals sent?”

“Hmm. I’m not sure.”

“The brain’s signals are transmitted to the body as electrical signals through the nervous system.”

Actually, as a liberal arts major, I was just explaining based on faint memories, but it probably wasn’t wrong.

“So you’re engraving Lightning magic onto the prosthetic arm?”

“Correct.”

As expected of an Archmage, he understood quickly.

Viola, on the other hand, was still looking at me with a puzzled expression. Was it because this was a bit outside the realm of alchemy?

I explained the principles of human movement to Viola in simpler terms.

“Ah~ I see. I understand.”

“Glad you understand. Then I’ll have you assist Principal Merlin.”

“Is there anything I can help with before that?”

“No. I can create the parts with my skill once I complete one set…”

“Ah, that skill.”

Viola had seen me use my skill to dig tunnels and build structures in the rift, so she understood immediately. The question came from the Archmage beside her.

“What is this skill?”

He looked incredibly curious.

To satisfy the curiosity of the old scholar who had dedicated his life to learning, I picked up a piece of wood and used my skill.

“Crafting.”

The piece of wood wobbled like a slime and quickly took the shape of a small figurine. A figurine, or rather, a statuette of Karina.

It was the only thing that came to mind.

…I hope I don’t get arrested for blasphemy.

“Such a skill… It’s truly eye-opening.”

“What’s the principle behind this skill? I’m curious about the mechanism.”

“It bypasses the process of making things I can create by hand. That’s all.”

“That’s an incredible skill. It could be classified as Unique.”

Unique?

“Ah, you’re not familiar with the skill classification system?”

“I haven’t really paid attention to it.”

I knew the game’s system, but I wasn’t sure if this world followed the same rules. It wasn’t crucial, but…

“Skills are classified as Normal, Rare, Unique, and Legendary.”

This part was the same as the game. This world was a strange mix of game settings and reality, making it hard to predict.

I placed the Karina statuette on the windowsill and changed the subject.

There was no need to hear something I already knew.

“We have a lot to discuss, so let’s get back to the main topic.”

“Alright. But where were we? My memory is a bit fuzzy.”

“I think it was about engraving Lightning magic onto the prosthetic arm.”

At Viola’s slightly humbler reply, Principal Merlin stroked his beard and nodded.

“Right. Engraving Lightning magic onto the prosthetic arm?”

“Yes. But it has to be very weak. The electrical signals in the human body are extremely faint, so it needs to match that.”

“That’s quite a difficult spell.”

“Won’t she get hurt? Why not just control it like a golem?”

“That has its own problems. The biggest issue is that if the wearer loses control, the prosthetic arm could damage their body. It could put excessive strain on the shoulder or cause accidents due to inaccurate movements.”

For combat purposes, that might be better, but for daily life, creating pseudo-nerves with magic circuits and connecting them would be much safer.

“Wouldn’t it be fine once she gets used to it? And wouldn’t it be better to test it directly?”

“You could get hurt.”

With Karina around, it shouldn’t be a problem, but it wasn’t worth the risk.

At my concern, Viola grinned as if to say it was nothing and patted her good shoulder with her remaining arm.

“I’ve already been hurt as much as I can be. Let’s proceed.”

“Then I’ll make two versions: one with magic circuits replicating the nervous system, and one controlled by command spells like a golem.”

Since the difference was only in the inscribed magic circles, I just needed to make one more.

Thinking of the necessary materials, I declared,

“Now that we’ve reached an agreement, let’s begin development…”

◇◇◇◆◇◇◇

“How is it?”

“It feels strange… Too light?”

Was the Lightness spell too strong?

I watched as Viola moved her arm around.

The steel prosthetic arm moved with surprising lightness, defying its material.

It seemed light enough even for the elderly to use.

“Try grabbing that cup.”

Viola walked towards the table with an awkward gait, as if still unfamiliar with the prosthetic arm. She carefully reached out and grasped the cup with the prosthetic.

“It’s strange. I’m holding the cup, but I can’t feel anything.”

“It’s impossible to replicate the sense of touch.”

Replicating that would require technology a thousand years in the future.

“Haha, not bad for a first attempt.”

“I didn’t expect you to make it in three days…”

“We were able to skip the design phase, so it was possible.”

I had barely slept, crafting everything from the gears to the frame by hand, but seeing the steel prosthetic arm, the magic circuit prototype, attached to Viola’s arm made all the hardship… disappear?

Bullshit.

I needed to collapse and sleep.

I was dying of sleep deprivation. They say humans need sleep to survive, and it felt like I was about to die after three days of this.

“How is it? Does it move as you intended?”

“It’s a bit awkward, but… I think I’ll get used to it in a couple of days.”

“Then I’ll ask Karina to prepare a guest room for you. You can stay for two days and monitor its performance.”

“Do that. It will be easier to check its condition that way.”

Viola reluctantly nodded.

I pressed my fingers against my eyelids.

“The basics are done, so I’ll leave the fine-tuning to you, sir.”

“Alright. Get some rest.”

Finally, sleep.

I stumbled towards the bed in the corner of the workshop and threw myself onto it.

Oh, I should take my shoes off.

Sleeping with shoes on was barbaric…

◇◇◇◆◇◇◇

“Goodness.”

The ninety-year-old Archmage smiled warmly as he watched the young man instantly fall asleep.

‘There was a time when I worked as hard as he does.’

That was decades ago.

The once passionate young man was now an old man waiting for his final days. That’s why he found the vibrant passion of youth so enviable.

He turned his gaze from Johann to Viola, who was adapting to the prosthetic arm by lifting and lowering objects.

“How is it? Can you manage?”

“It feels strange, like I’m using tongs to pick things up… but I think I’ll get used to it. I’m not sure about strenuous activities, though.”

“You’ve just taken the first step, so don’t be too impatient. With time and development, you’ll be able to use it like a real arm.”

“Yes…”

Viola replied in a tearful voice and lowered her head. As she looked down, she saw the prosthetic arm, moving according to her will, albeit a bit clumsily. She opened and closed her fingers one by one.

That simple action brought tears to her eyes.

So many people had turned their backs on her just because she was missing an arm.

Viola touched the prosthetic with her good hand. The rough, metallic texture was strangely comforting.

Now, no one would look down on her for being one-armed.

Principal Merlin watched Viola with a warm smile and then turned his gaze to Johann. He cast a silencing spell on him, ensuring he wouldn’t be disturbed.

Then, with a mischievous twinkle in his eye, he said to Viola,

“I’m going to use the restroom. Don’t worry, the silencing spell is in place.”

He quickly slipped out of the workshop before Viola could stop him. His speed was surprising for an old man.

Viola stared wide-eyed at the sliver of light coming from the doorway.

And then, tears began to fall.

In the silence, the pent-up emotions she had been holding back burst forth like a dam breaking.

There was no sound.

I’d expect in a game setting like this to be possible for a saint to make miracles that restore long-missing limbs too. So this whole commotion would be essentially redundant. Unless you can say that curse disables her abilities temporarily.
