Seeing Yellow enter the arcade, I blinked, wondering if I’d seen wrong. But usually, when you questioned what you’d seen, it meant you were probably right, so I cautiously followed her inside.

The arcade was filled with the sounds of various games. It was a weekday morning, even if it was Friday, so I hadn’t expected many people, but it wasn’t completely empty.

Quite a few people were playing games, and I scanned the crowd, looking for the familiar dark blonde bob I’d just seen.

Skipping a meeting to go to an arcade? My opinion of her plummeted. Of course, my judgment wouldn’t affect her in any way; it was just my personal impression.

It didn’t take long to find her distinctive hair. She stood before a fighting game console, expertly manipulating the joystick, completely engrossed in the game. Hunter Killer headquarters might be nearby, and here she was, skipping a meeting to play arcade games in the morning.

I’d become somewhat familiar with Earth culture, and gaming, in particular, was fascinating. While my initial enthusiasm had waned after being consistently defeated by Koreans in every game I tried after arriving in Korea, I still appreciated the culture.

I didn’t play games myself and wasn’t particularly interested, but I understood their significance as a form of entertainment.

I also knew the fighting game she was playing was popular worldwide. Yellow’s fingers flew across the controls, executing complex moves with her chosen character. She won her match, briefly stretched her hands, and then started the next stage.

Her movements suggested she was a regular. She was good, and her quiet intensity seemed to fit the arcade atmosphere.

I watched her for a moment, then decided I couldn’t just stand there staring; it would be too suspicious, so I moved further back, hiding among the game consoles, making sure she couldn’t easily spot me if she turned around.

Just standing around in an arcade would look strange, but I couldn’t bring myself to play any games. I was here to observe her, not to have fun.

Yellow sat down and continued playing. She stayed there for almost an hour, not moving from her spot, and watching her play was surprisingly tiring.

“Why isn’t she going to the meeting?”

That was the fundamental question. While Yu-bin had brought me here to buy sunscreen, the fact that she’d made a detour, despite her limited time before work, suggested Hunter Killer headquarters wasn’t far from here.

Of course, I could be wrong, and if I was, the fact that Yellow was skipping a meeting to play arcade games wouldn’t be related to the headquarters’ location.

But even if I was wrong about the location, it didn’t change the fact that she was skipping a meeting to be here. She didn’t seem to have any urgent matters to attend to, so why was she here, alone, playing arcade games on a weekday morning?

As I pondered the question, Yellow suddenly stood up. I flinched, worried I’d been spotted, but she, oblivious to her surroundings, walked towards the exit.

I waited a bit before following her, not wanting to risk a direct encounter. I was worried I might lose her, but thankfully, she wasn’t far ahead when I stepped outside.

I cautiously followed her as she walked towards the subway station, and after a short ride, she entered a movie theater.

“The movie theater? Is she meeting someone?”

I muttered to myself, my unanswered question echoing in the air, as I continued to tail her.

I’d successfully followed her to the movie theater, but I had no way of knowing which movie she was seeing. I watched from a distance as she bought a ticket.

I was worried she’d sense me following her, her superhuman senses heightened, but she seemed completely oblivious, focused only on her own actions.

I followed her into the theater. It was a recently released action movie, but I wasn’t interested. I was too preoccupied with observing her, her dark blonde hair visible from my seat in the back row.

‘What is she doing?’

She was clearly here alone, enjoying herself.

But that wasn’t what I was curious about. Why was Yellow, who rarely attended meetings and had caused trouble at yesterday’s meeting, skipping another meeting to spend the morning at an arcade and now at a movie theater?

I didn’t know much about her, but even with my limited information, it was clear that while she wasn’t close to the other Hunter Killer members, they weren’t on bad terms either. Was there another reason for her absences?

I realized the movie was over when the end credits started rolling, and she stood up and left the theater. I’d been there for over two hours but couldn’t remember a single scene.

Yellow left the movie theater, walked briskly in the scorching heat, took the subway, and returned to the station near the arcade.

Following her unpredictable movements was becoming a chore. The Hunter Killer meeting would have ended by now, so her current activities were clearly unrelated to the meeting.

She entered a small udon restaurant and started eating lunch.

I couldn’t go inside; it was a small place, and we’d definitely run into each other, so I decided to wait outside.

I bought a drink from a convenience store, and when I came back, she was still eating. I watched her from afar, but perhaps because I was so focused on her, I didn’t feel hungry.

“She’s eating a lot.”

I could see her from outside, easily consuming what looked like three servings of udon. I continued to follow her after she finished and left the restaurant, and she headed back to the arcade.

The arcade was more crowded now, and she went to a rhythm game machine, inserted some coins, chose a song, and started playing, her fingers hitting the notes with precision. Just like with the fighting game, she was clearly a skilled player. Even I, with my lack of gaming skills, could tell.

After finishing the rhythm game, she went to a shooting game.

I decided to just watch and wait until she was done; there wasn’t much else I could do.

The arcade was getting crowded, so I figured I could get closer without being noticed.

If she spotted me now, it wouldn’t just be bad luck; it would mean she knew I was following her.

After she finished the shooting game, I followed her as she left the machine, wondering where she was going, and she went back to a fighting game console. She seemed used to being watched and played, unfazed by the onlookers, expertly manipulating the joystick.

Some of the regulars, recognizing her skill, kept their distance.

I finally gave up on watching her and started replying to the messages I’d been receiving, waiting for her to finish her game.

But I was getting restless, bored from just watching, so I sat down at a console across from her and inserted some coins.

I didn’t know how to play fighting games. I’d just put in the coins out of boredom, and I somehow ended up being matched against Yellow.

I could have played single-player mode, but I’d accidentally pressed some buttons and was now facing her in a duel.

I hadn’t expected to have a showdown with her like this, outside of our usual duels.

I’d just wanted to kill some time, and it wasn’t like we’d recognize each other in-game, so I decided to just play.

And the result was a crushing defeat. A swift, decisive loss, just like in our duels, that almost gave me PTSD.

I sighed, and Yellow, seeing me, stood up. I flinched, worried I’d been spotted, but she was just leaving the arcade.

Had she finally finished playing? I followed her outside.

I hadn’t realized how long I’d been in the noisy, dimly lit arcade; it was already dark outside.

I checked my phone; there was a message from Yu-bin.

[Are you out?]

I’d told her I’d be waiting at home, and she’d come back from work to find me gone. It was a natural question, and I replied that I’d stepped out for a bit and would be back soon, then resumed following Yellow.

She took the subway, got off at another station, entered a market street, browsed several stores, bought a lot of food, and then walked towards what seemed like her apartment building. Judging by the upscale neighborhood and expensive-looking apartment, she didn’t seem to have any financial difficulties.

…That was all I’d learned after following her all day. She’d spent the entire day at the arcade, the movies, and then eating. Her unpredictable behavior only deepened the mystery surrounding her.

“What does she even do?”

I muttered to myself, annoyed. Now that she’d gone inside, there was nothing more I could do. Would I have to come back to the arcade if I wanted to find her again?

But I wasn’t sure I’d find her here again, especially since I didn’t know her schedule.

“Let’s just go home.”

I sighed and headed back to my apartment, where Yu-bin was waiting, my mind consumed by the question of who to ask about Yellow.

Yellow pressed the button for the top floor, her arms laden with groceries, and waited.

She arrived at the top floor, entered the passcode, and stepped inside a spacious penthouse apartment.

Despite the size of the apartment, it was quiet, and she placed the groceries on the living room table, turned on the game console, inserted an RPG game CD, and started playing while eating.

She ate her dinner alone, playing video games, in the vast, empty penthouse.

The next day, I arrived at the cafe, and as usual, Yu-ra greeted me with a kiss.

Perhaps because of last week’s events, I no longer hesitated to embrace and kiss her.

Yu-ra also seemed happy to see me, her mood instantly brightening as we kissed. I even caressed her breasts; it was just the two of us in the storage room, so it was okay.

We started our shift, but my curiosity about Yellow lingered. What kind of person was she? Yu-ra rarely talked about her, so should I even ask?

“Yu-ra.”

“Yeah?”

I called out to her as she dried the dishes I’d washed, and she turned to look at me.

I felt bad about asking, especially after their argument at the meeting two days ago, but Yu-ra was the easiest person to ask, so I had no choice.

“What’s Yellow like?”

“…”

Yu-ra frowned, her expression clearly showing annoyance for the first time.

“Why?”

“No reason, just… you often talk about the other members, but you’ve never really mentioned her.”

It was a flimsy excuse, but I had to start somewhere. I’d never learn anything about Yellow if I waited for Yu-ra to bring her up.

“She’s stuck-up and unfriendly.”

Her blunt description made me chuckle awkwardly.

“You don’t get along?”

“Of course not. She’s always quiet, so I don’t know what she’s thinking, and we even fought at the meeting two days ago!”

Yu-ra, clearly still harboring some resentment, started talking about her argument with Yellow at the meeting, which had stemmed from Green’s situation.

“But wasn’t it too harsh of her to say that to Green? I know she wasn’t wrong, but you have to be careful with your words. No one can become friends with someone who talks like that.”

“Do you even want to be friends with her?”

She didn’t seem completely opposed to the idea, and I felt a sense of relief, for some reason, that there was still a possibility of them becoming friends.

“Of course. We’ve been on the same team for almost five years.”

While the current Hunter Killer team structure had been in place for three years, Yu-ra (Pink), Ha-yeong (Blue), and Yellow had been working together for five years, so they’d known each other longer than Yu-bin and Green.

“How can we become closer?”

“Huh?”

I didn’t know Yellow well enough to offer any advice. I’d taken Yu-bin’s side during their argument because I was her boyfriend, but…

I couldn’t think of what to say.

“I think understanding the other person is important.”

I needed to learn more about Yellow, and so did Yu-ra. Should I start by offering some advice, framing my questions as suggestions?

“Understanding the other person…”

“I don’t really know Yellow, so I don’t know what to tell you.”

“Hmm…”

Yu-ra, who’d been working with Yellow for five years, thought for a moment.

Maybe I could get some information from her.
